Hot flashes are the most common symptoms that are experienced by women who are approaching the menopausal period or who are in the stage of menopause.  Hot flashes can cause too much discomforts and can disrupt the activities of daily living. Here are some of the ways on how to stop hot flashes.

1. Know the right dresses to wear

If you are experiencing hot flashes, one of the most important things to consider is choosing of the proper dress to wear.  If you prefer to dress in layers, wear light tank tops over a blouse.  If you start to heat up, it is easy for you to drop the blouse. Also, choose a fabric that wicks away the perspiration from the skin. Loose fit clothes and Capri pants are helpful in keeping you cooler on the inside because air can circulate freely.

2. Stay in a cool and fresh room

Keeping your environment as cool as possible will help you feel better. If you don’t have an air conditioner, you can use a fan or you can simply open the windows to allow fresh air to enter the room. During the day, it is best that your indoor temperature is below 70 degrees and about 65 degrees during the night. This will keep your body temperature from rising up. When sleeping, use only light covers.

3. Know what to eat and drink

Avoid eating hot and spicy foods. Also, avoid any foods that can raise your body temperature.  If a certain food can trigger your hot flashes, then avoid them completely. Avoid drinking hot drinks and alcohol as they can also raise the temperature of your body.  Stay hydrated by drinking a lot of water. Enough water is needed by your body to keep the system cool and to avoid overheating.

4. Take over the counter medications to stop hot flashes

Popular and safe medications that are said to treat hot flashes are herbs and vitamins that contain black cohosh, yam phyto estrogens and vitamin E. If these are not your options, feel free to visit your physician and ask for a prescription.  Other medications that are said to reduce hot flashes are anti-seizure medications, antidepressants and blood pressure medications but these should be taken only if needed and advised by the physician. Additionally, medications that contain estrogen are also said to help in treating hot flashes.

5. Replace your lost hormones

Hot flashes occur because during the menopausal period your estrogen levels drop. This is also the main reason why you are experiencing the other symptoms of menopause.  Up until present, estrogen hormone therapy and replacement is still one of the most effective ways to eliminate and decrease the occurrence of hot flashes.  All you have to do is to visit your physician and discuss this type of option. You will need low doses of estrogen, but if the symptoms are severe, wherein your hot flashes are already disrupting your ability to concentrate and work and are keeping you from sleeping properly, then increasing the doses may become necessary. Then again, before you begin any hormone therapy, consult your physician for they know what’s best for you.
