The Harmful Effects of Cigarette Smoking
icon1 admin | icon2 Uncategorized | icon4 06 30th, 2009| icon3Comments Off

Effects Of Smoking

Our population is bombarded with warnings through all modes of communications concerning the harmful effects of cigarette smoking. Unfortunately, a significant portion of the population falls under the category of being a smoker. Smoking a cigarette means a person is at risk of taking over 4000 harmful chemicals into their body. The entire elements of cigarette smoking adversely interfere with the normal functions of the human body. The effects of cigarette smoking are fatal and extensive. For this reason, our population is highly at risk.

Nicotine

Damaging effects occur when harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke pass through the body. Nicotine, the most common component of cigarette smoking, reach the brain in less than 10 seconds and affects various organs of human body. A breastfeeding woman is at higher risk for cigarette smoking and the effects of cigarette smoking are more dangerous to infant. Carbon Monoxide from cigarette smoking combines with hemoglobin within the red blood corpuscles which inhibit the process of oxygen transportation throughout the cells.

Carcinogens

One of the significant compounds of cigarette smoke is the cancer causing agent known as carcinogens, which can alter or damage the structure of the genes responsible for cell growth. The result is either restrained or excessive abnormal cell production. Both conditions are harmful and place the person at a higher level of susceptibility to develop various types of cancer. The effects of cigarette smoking have great effect on the immune system and respiratory system.

The effects of cigarette smoking are quite vast and deep-rooted. One of the most complex effects of cigarette smoking is the formation of oxidative stress that mutates DNA which eventually leads to chronic lung injury. It is assumed that the oxidative stress is an important symptom related to acceleration of the aging process. Advance stages of oxidative stress may lead to the development of various types of cancer, cardiovascular disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Normally, our body produces certain level of antioxidants which aids in repairing damaged cells, preventing the production of free radicals and the like. Cigarette smoking directly interferes with this process and it also promotes production of free radicals. Chronic inflammation can be considered as one of the serious effects of cigarette smoking, which also accelerates the oxidative process.

Effective Treatment For Acne Scar Removal
icon1 admin | icon2 hot flashes | icon4 06 30th, 2009| icon3Comments Off

Even if acne is not medically classified as a chronic condition, the tissue scarring that it causes is most often permanent. If the damage at the level of the skin is too extensive with lots of compromised cells, then removing acne scars will involve a rather complex surgical procedure. There are several criteria that influence a specialist into recommending a certain therapeutic course of action: the patient’s medical history, the scar type, the severity of the problem, possible medication sensitivity and the preference for a certain treatment over another.

There are several kinds of acne scars known as ice picks, craters, or pits. Certain forms of acne scar removal minimize the tissue damage either temporarily or on a permanent basis. Sometimes in order to get rid of the scared skin areas several medical stages are required. Chemical peeling, dermabrasion, laser surgery, punch grafts, collagen injections or fat transfer make only a few of the interventions used for acne scar removal.

The costs of acne scar removal vary depending on the complexity of the procedure, but laser therapy is surely one of the most expensive of all. If we count the cost of several sessions, then, the overall amount will be like a little fortune. It is good to check the health insurance policy and see whether part of the intervention costs are covered by the insurance company or no. Most of the time such surgery makes people take money out of their pocket, which is why the average user can seldom relish it.

Regardless of the type of procedure, acne scar removal represents a process that takes a lot of time and patience. In most cases, the various therapeutic interventions are followed by temporary side effects that make the skin look even worse than before, with swollen red areas that are painful most of the time. This inconvenience is common to almost all the surgical treatments since they all have a basic element in common: the natural tissue generation, which can only be triggered by the infliction of small wounds.

Moreover, several subjective factors influence the choice of the effective acne  treatment, as it is all resumed to individuality. The recovery interval after the intervention is also influenced by the personal speed of reaction, some people will have new tissues sooner while for others the process goes more slowly. And last but not least, while in some cases two or three surgical interventions may be necessary, in others one could be enough.

Alternative therapy is large subject, and a person who wants to understand this kind of therapy should prepare to embrace a number of disciplines and should also think about different approaches. And these approaches may include the need for proper diet to lifestyle changes. Alternative therapies are used for many health conditions and disorders, and one such role of an alternative therapy treatment is to tackle insomnia. This form of treatment is considered as an important option for those seeking to address their sleeping issues and considered to be effective as well. When you think of the alternative therapies that can be used for insomnia treatment, then you have to think about herbal supplements, melatonin, acupuncture, meditation, exercise and a few more approaches and strategies. For a better understanding of these alternative therapies, here is a rough guide on what these therapies are.

#1: Use of herbal supplements to combat insomnia

Herbal supplements. This is the treatment option of choice for those looking for an effective escape from insomnia without the usual side effects. There are a number of herbs that can prove its worth, and one example is the valerian root. This herb is seen by many as an important herb in promoting sleep. The chamomile is another important herb when it comes to insomnia treatment. This is safe, according to FDA with no known side effects. Other herbs worth using include the passion flower, ginseng, lemon balm and the skullcap.

#2: Use of melatonin for insomnia

Your melatonin is actually the hormone made by the gland in the brain, and this hormone can be produced as well by other plants and animals. It has been found out that this plays a role in the regulation of the sleep-wake cycle. Researches also have it that the use of this herb can decrease the sleep disturbances and in the process promote healthy sleep. Some minimal side effects are noted, so still use this option with care.

#3: Adoption of acupuncture for insomnia

This is a traditional medicine used by the Chinese in the treatment of the sleeping disorder. In this alternative treatment option, very fine needles will be inserted into the skin of the person at the identified acupuncture points so that these fine needles can influence the functions of the body. The use of acupuncture is seen by many as an effective approach against insomnia. But others are saying that some more researches are needed in order to establish the efficacy of the acupuncture as a treatment option.

#4: Treating insomnia through relaxation and meditation

According to some sleep health practitioners, the increased muscle tension and stress-full thoughts and ideas can affect the quality of sleep. For this reason, relaxing activities that focus on the muscles can address the sleeping disorder. Practitioners are pointing to progressive muscle relaxation and biofeedback and meditation as helpful approaches that can quiet the mind and body and allow the sufferer to drift into a peaceful sleep. Perfecting meditation can take weeks, but the results are worth the wait. Some form of exercise can also help the person achieve what he is looking for all night long- a peaceful and a relaxing sleep.

The Quit Smoking Pill Will Not be For Everyone
icon1 admin | icon2 Uncategorized | icon4 06 29th, 2009| icon3Comments Off

It is amazing, isn’t it, that we live in an age where so many of our maladies and physical problems can be fixed or even addressed with a simple pill.  Have a cold?  Take a pill.  Need some vitamins?  Take a pill.  Don’t want to get pregnant?  Take a pill.

With so many simple remedies available in pill form today, some may wonder if there really is an effective quit smoking pill that’s available, affordable, and that really will work.

One thing about all of the ways to quit smoking available is that if the smoker is not ready to give up their habit, none of them are going to work. Not even the quit smoking medication will deliver the desired effect if the smoker is not ready to quit. The quit smoking medication is not necessarily the end all pill for pulling the plug on the smoking habit but how it approaches the habit is different from many of the replacement therapy products on the market.

The normal course runs for over 8 to 12 weeks. Individuals who stop too soon or who take the pill intermittently will not get the benefit from the treatment since its effect is accumulative.  Stop smoking pills typically come with strict instructions on their use, and these instructions should be followed to the letter.

The pill should be taken for at least a week during which you should continue to smoke.  You should plan to quit smoking during the second week.  If you have not stopped smoking by the seventh week of Zyban therapy, it is unlikely that you will quit during that attempt and Zyban therapy should be discontinued.

This form of stop smoking pill is only available with a prescription, and does have some side effects which your doctor will outline for you.

Other Smoking Cessation Aids Available

For those who are concerned with the cost or side effects of the stop smoking pills, there are many other aids available on the market today to help them.  This may include nicotine patches or gum, or even hypnotherapy.  Many former smokers have reported good experiences with these products and courses of treatment, so it is good to know that anyone looking to stop smoking does have options when it comes to the help that’s available.  Maybe one day there will be a cheap, foolproof, side effect-free stop smoking pill out there, but for now, you can of course speak with your doctor about these other choices if you’re ready to give up the habit of smoking.
